Strategy Overview
Lamprell plans to meet demand by continuing to develop its existing services and products, in line with customer demands and by providing new and expanded facilities in the Hamriyah Free Zone. In addition, the group has expanded its offering with facilities in Thailand looking to access the SE Asian market.
Lamprell has fabricated many process modules and structures for reputed FPSO providers and aims to be able to continue to provide such services for the FPSO projects undertaken in the region.
Repeat business is a key component of Lamprell's strategy and is driven by its focus on quality, timeliness of delivery and price competitiveness. Lamprell can compete well for major projects in the world marketplace and offers an attractive alternative to the Far East, Europe and the US. Shipping of completed structures can be arranged to all areas of the world from Lamprell's quayside access in Sharjah, Hamriyah and via its load out corridor in Jebel Ali. Lamprell offers similar services to existing clients at its new facility in Sattahip, Thailand.
To ensure that Lamprell continues to have sufficient space to maintain its market share, Lamprell will transfer some operations to the New Hamriyah Facility in 2009. When completed, the New Hamriyah Facility will be one of the most modern in the Middle East, with a quayside capacity to execute up to 10 jackup rig upgrade and refurbishment projects at any one time. It will also contain large covered and open fabrication areas that will allow the Group to undertake major new build projects, such as the construction of jackup rigs. The New Hamriyah Facility will also enable the Group to commence the refurbishment of drill ships and semisubmersible drilling units which, up to this time, it has been unable to service effectively because of space and water depth constraints. It is intended that all of the operations that are carried out at the Sharjah Facility will eventually be transferred to the New Hamriyah Facility, as will some of the operations that are carried out at the Jebel Ali Facility, thereby releasing capacity at the Jebel Ali Facility. The New Hamriyah Facility is expected to reduce any capacity constraints for the foreseeable future and will allow Lamprell to operate as a “one-stop-shop” for the various types of rig repair and construction projects it currently undertakes, as well as allowing it to provide customers with the capability to execute multiple new build projects.
Lamprell Asia has secured the use of a portside facility of approximately 47,000m2 in Sattahip, Thailand under an initial five-year co-operation agreement. The Sattahip Facility has approximately 160 metres of exclusive deep water quayside access. This facility will initially undertake jackup upgrade and refurbishment projects, although other project types may be considered in the future.
This expansion provides an excellent opportunity to transfer the skills and reputation Lamprell has built over many years, through its operations in the UAE, to a region which offers a significant fleet of jackup drilling rigs owned by predominantly the same group of clients that operate in the Middle East. The facility has been fully operational since the beginning of 2009.
Since its listing on AIM in 2006, Lamprell has successfully expanded its range of projects to include major new build construction projects. To date, the Group has undertaken, or contracted to undertake, work on the following projects:
- Seajacks Liftboats – Lamprell is currently simultaneously constructing two harsh environment special purpose self-propelled four-legged jackup liftboats. These EPC projects cover all aspects of project development from design to delivery. The first unit was delivered in March 2009 and the second unit will be delivered four months later.
- Scorpion S116E jackup drilling rigs – Lamprell has contracted to construct and deliver to Scorpion Rigs Ltd two completely outfitted and equipped LeTourneau designed Super 116E jackup drilling units. The first rig will be delivered in the second quarter ofmid- 2009 and the second rig at the end of 2009.
- Riginvest GP S116E jackup drilling rig – The Group has also contracted with Riginvest GP for the construction and delivery of a LeTourneau designed Super 116E jackup drilling rig, for delivery in mid-2010.
- BassDrill Alpha Ltd – Lamprell has contracted with BassDrill Alpha Ltd to construct and deliver two self-erecting tender assist drilling units. The first unit will be delivered in the third quarter of 2009 and the second unit is expected to be delivered in the second quarter of 2010.
Lamprell intends to develop its new build capabilities in the jackup rig, jackup derivative design, tender barge and liftboat sectors in the future on a selective basis.
Lamprell intends to further improve the operating capacity of its business. Furthermore, as Lamprell grows, the Company will continue to invest in operating equipment to improve productivity and achieve cost savinsg by way of reduced hire charges. The new facility at Hamriyah is also expected to increase operating efficiencies, as it has been designed with a focus on optimising work flows.
One of Lamprell's principal assets continues to be its personnel and the management team will ensure that continued improvements are made in such key areas as employee communication and labour relations. At Lamprell the challenges of attracting new staff and retention of staff are minimised due to the Company’s successful benchmarking, job matching and “career ladder” methodologies. This has been combined with communication of clear expectations to the employee, providing frequent feedback and making the employee feel valued.
