Community Engagement

Within India, there is a large community of poor and/or disadvantaged people who largely remain outside of mainstream society, with no disciplined culture of training and eventual absorption into the normal working environment. This system is generally self propagating and virtually ensures a life of poverty.

There are two categories of urban and rural youth, between the ages of 15 and 18 years, that are most vulnerable in being enslaved within this cycle of poverty and these are:

  • The homeless youth, largely owing to their poverty and subsequent lack of opportunities in gaining a proper education or skills for gainful employment.
  • Runaway youths from Below Poverty Line (BPL) families that have been unable to complete their basic education and therefore struggle in their search for employment.

Don Bosco Snehalaya is a project focused on the street children and youth, living in the city of Baroda, Gujarat. The basic objective of Snehalaya is to provide shelter to the young living on the railway platforms and in the streets and other vulnerable children who are in need of care and protection. Snehalaya provides food, clothes, medicines, recreational facilities, counselling, job placement, contact with their families and training in trades according to their capacities and limitations. They are given opportunities to interact with the public, to express their potential and their talents. This helps them to develop their self confidence and the consciousness that they too can contribute something to the society. Ultimately, Snehalaya aims at enabling these street children to return to a decent life within mainstream society.

Lamprell assists with financial support to this shelter on an annual basis. The partnership between Lamprell and the Don Bosco Institutions of Mumbai Province have a lasting impact on the individual and family. The Don Bosco Institutes have a vast experience in the field of skills training and are confident that disadvantaged youth will achieve useful skills through these initiatives and eventual full-time employment.
