Overall purpose of role
Plan, distribute, monitor, and check work activities related to the development of design and construction drawings for structural and outfitting works such as foundations, platforms, helidecks, and living quarters. Supervise large teams of draftsmen and designers while working across multiple projects, preparing detailed structural drawings and material take-offs based on basic design drawings or sketches provided by engineers and designers. Ensure that all deliverables comply with customer technical specifications, company standards, production requirements, and relevant statutory regulations. Maintain high technical quality in drafting with consistent presentation to ensure clarity and ease of construction.
Primary responsibilities, authorities & accountabilities
- Act as a checker for design-related deliverables, ensuring clarity, quality, and completeness in both 2D packages and 3D models in accordance with drafting standards.
- Perform periodic model reviews to assess content quality and participate in 3D model reviews as required.
- Review design deliverables for completeness, safety, accessibility, material handling, maintenance, and operability.
- Collaborate with the 3D CAD Coordinator to ensure proper project closeout.
- Prepare Material Take-Offs (MTOs) and perform designer functions as required.
- Ensure interdisciplinary and management-level review, checking, and approval of all design deliverables.
- Contribute to the establishment and maintenance of company standards in coordination with the Engineering department.
- Review and update discipline-specific design guidelines and standards.
- Plan and schedule team activities while monitoring team performance and ensuring adherence to budgets and production targets.
- Work with clients during the conceptual design phase and provide accurate estimates of drawing quantities for deliverables.
- Develop and forecast staffing needs and budget requirements, including time and material estimates.
- Coordinate with IT to support software setup and development related to design activities.
- Develop and maintain drawing lists and ensure project compliance with applicable codes, standards, and vendor specifications.
- Review and comment on vendor drawings and perform site surveys as necessary.
- Analyze design options to optimize cost and scheduling, and supervise project closeout activities, including as-built documentation.
- Ensure compliance with client specifications, company requirements, HSES policies, and information security protocols.
- Identify and plan training and development needs for design team personnel.
- Coordinate project activities across multiple office locations, providing detailed guidance to the design team.
- Demonstrate knowledge of field safety requirements and contribute to bid and proposal development.
- Recommend design improvements and integrate lessons learned into future projects.
- Assist the Lead Engineer in performance assessments, identifying training needs, and achieving departmental Key Performance Indicators (KPIs).
Attainment
- Minimum education: ITI Draftsmanship or Diploma in any Engineering discipline, preferably Civil.
- Minimum experience: 15+ years in the offshore/onshore oil and gas facilities or drilling rigs design and construction industry.
- Proficient in AutoCAD for 2D drafting and/or ShipConstructor/AVEVA Marine for 3D hull modeling, and/or PDMS/TEKLA for 3D outfitting and structural modeling, or equivalent software.
- Experience with plate/profile nesting and CNC programming is preferred.
- Strong communication skills, both written and verbal, with the ability to effectively interact across multiple disciplines.
