Principal Designer – Structural

Overall purpose of role

Supervise the entire structural team of draftsmen and designers, acting as the subject matter expert for all drafting requirements related to structural detailed, FEED, basic, and fabrication engineering works. Ensure that all deliverables comply with customer technical specifications, company standards, production requirements, and applicable statutory regulations.

Primary responsibilities, authorities & accountabilities

• Manage the team of designers for all ongoing projects.
• Establish company standards in collaboration with the engineering department.
• Review and update discipline-specific design guidelines and standards.
• Develop bid estimation norms in line with company procedures and industry best practices.
• Review ongoing bids, cost-to-complete (CTR), and budget estimates.
• Review the Master Deliverable Register (MDR) across various projects.
• Monitor and control the budget of ongoing projects against bid manhours.
• Track team performance and ensure budget compliance, including drawing and material quantity production rates.
• Develop, forecast, and maintain staffing and recruitment plans.
• Ensure interdisciplinary and management review, checking, and approval of design deliverables.
• Maintain the competency matrix for the drafting team and develop an annual training plan for competency development.
• Conduct interviews for structural designers, 3D modelers, and checkers.
• Perform structural model completion audits for various projects on AFC models.
• Conduct technical quality audits (TQA) for critical project deliverables to ensure proper project completion.
• Participate in 3D model reviews alongside the 3D model governance team before project model reviews to ensure high-quality models are presented to the client.
• Review critical primary deliverables prior to IFR issuance to ensure the quality of drawings issued to the client.
• Work on 3D models and/or 2D packages following drafting standards while maintaining clarity, quality, and completeness of details.
• Perform periodic overall model reviews to verify content levels and participate in 3D model reviews as required.
• Review designs for overall completeness, general safety issues, access, materials handling compliance, maintenance, and operability.
• Collaborate with the 3D CAD Coordinator to ensure proper project closeout upon completion.
• Develop and supervise the MTO team to ensure timely ordering of all materials per project requirements.

Attainment

• Minimum education: ITI Draftsmanship or Diploma in any Engineering discipline, preferably Civil.
• Minimum experience: Over 20 years in design and construction within offshore/onshore oil and gas facilities or drilling rigs.
• Proven experience as a Lead Designer on multiple projects with hands-on expertise in S3D/E3D modeling and MicroStation or AutoCAD for 2D drafting.
