The everyday actions behind wellbeing

From managing summer heat to supporting mental health and everyday wellbeing, looking after people is part of how Lamprell approaches safety, at work and beyond.

People do their best work when they feel safe, supported and looked after. That can mean different things on different days. For someone working outdoors through a UAE summer, it may mean access to water, shade and a proper rest break. For someone dealing with stress at home, a health concern or family pressures, it may mean knowing there is someone they can speak to confidentially. Looking after people means recognising both.

Keeping people safe

For teams working outdoors in the UAE, the summer heat must be taken seriously. Lamprell’s Summer Heat Campaign focuses on preventing heat-related illness before it happens, using Heat Index monitoring to assess conditions and guide working practices throughout the day.

The programme includes hydration and electrolyte replacement, acclimatisation for employees adjusting to the heat, and access to temperature-controlled rest areas. Operations, HSES and medical teams work closely together to monitor conditions and support people on site, alongside the UAE Mid-Day Break, which suspends outdoor work between 12:30 and 15:00 from 15 June to 15 September.

Lamprell has now completed four consecutive years without a serious heat-related illness. Behind that record are hundreds of small actions repeated every day: stopping for water, taking a break when needed, recognising the early signs of heat stress and noticing when the person working beside you may need to step away from the heat. That is often what safety looks like in practice. Procedures and controls are essential, but so is looking out for one another.

In Saudi Arabia, safe-driving awareness has also encouraged employees to think about safety on the road, not only at work. It also reminds us that wellbeing extends beyond physical safety on a project site.

Supporting the whole person

People do not leave the rest of their lives at the door when they arrive at work. They may carry stress, financial worries, family responsibilities, relationship difficulties, or health concerns while still getting on with the working day.

“At Lamprell, wellbeing is not treated as a one-off initiative or an annual event. It is part of how we look after our people day to day, recognising that physical health, mental health, financial security and a sense of connection all shape how people feel and perform. Our approach aims to give employees the knowledge, tools and support to look after themselves, and to build a workplace where asking for help is seen as a strength rather than a weakness.”

Lamprell’s employee wellbeing programme includes health screenings, wellbeing sessions, and initiatives around hydration, nutrition, mindfulness, and healthier lifestyles. Mental-health awareness and leadership training have also helped open up conversations that are not always easy to start.

Wellbeing also includes pressures people face outside work. A recent Financial Wellbeing Session gave employees guidance on budgeting and financial planning, fraud awareness, savings and investments, and planning for major life decisions such as buying a first home. It builds on the financial wellbeing support already available through the Employee Assistance Programme.

Sometimes people need practical advice, sometimes professional support, and sometimes simply knowing where to turn can help. The Employee Assistance Programme gives employees and eligible family members confidential, 24/7 access to professional support. Counsellors, therapists and specialist advisers can help with emotional wellbeing and stress, family and relationship concerns, and financial, legal and general wellbeing support.

Knowing those conversations are private can bring peace of mind. People can ask for help without feeling they have to manage everything alone.

Growing, connecting and taking part

Wellbeing is also shaped by whether people feel connected and have opportunities to grow. Across Lamprell, training and development continue to support employees and emerging talent, from the Energy Academy and graduate training initiatives in Saudi Arabia to ongoing learning across the wider business. Lamprell’s people-and-culture material also places skills development alongside broader support for employees and the environments in which they work.

Away from formal training, activities such as Toastmasters, chess competitions, Onam celebrations and national-day events give colleagues time to connect beyond their day-to-day roles. Lamprell has long used social, cultural and sporting activities to bring people together across departments, disciplines and nationalities, with a strong focus on camaraderie and community.

Looking out for each other

Care for health has also extended into the wider community. In Saudi Arabia, colleagues recently took part in a blood donation initiative, giving them a chance to support others directly.

A cool place to rest during a summer shift, a conversation with a counsellor, a reminder to slow down on the road, support with financial planning, a training opportunity, or giving blood to help someone you may never meet: they are very different things, but they all come back to people.

They also say something about the kind of working environment Lamprell continues to build, where safety is part of everyday behaviour, wellbeing is spoken about openly, and people are encouraged to look after themselves and each other. That carries through into the work itself. Complex projects depend on people being alert, healthy and able to make good decisions. Safe delivery comes from teams that understand the risks around them and know their health and wellbeing are taken seriously.

Behind every project are the people who make it happen, and looking after them is part of doing the job well.
